Spreading Awareness

During 1999 – 2000, Dr. Naseema Hurzuk President, Saahas Disability Research & Care Foundation, Kolhapur, wrote a column ‘Chakachi Khurchi’ (The Wheel Chair) in Sunday edition of ‘Sakaal’ Marathi newspaper. The column though autobiographical, also highlighted her struggle for rehabilitation of the physically challenged. Due to popular demand, this column was compiled in a book form and on 30 September 2001 the book was formally released at the hands of noted social worker Dr. Anil Awchat who also presided over the book release ceremony. Shri Anant Dixit, Editor, Sakal Pune Edition and publisher Shri Anil Mehta also graced the occasion.

The book was translated in English by Mrs. Asha Deodhar and published by Viveka Foundation of New Delhi under the title “Naseema – The Incredible Story”. The English edition was revised and second edition published in 2017.  The book was later translated in the Gujarati language and published by Gangaba Publications of Ahmedabad. It was released in Ahmedabad on 12 March 2006 by noted scholar Shri Morari Bapu.

The book was translated in Telugu language and published by Hyderabad Book Trust. It was translated in Kannada by Smt. Lalita Bartakke and published by Martahi Vangmaya Premi Mandal of Belgaum. It was translated in Hindi by Dr. Girish Kashid and published by Rajkamal Prakashan of New Delhi under the title “Kursi Pahiyonwali”. It was translated in Urdu language by Dr. Anees Rasheed Khan and published by Pharos Media Publication, New Delhi under the title ‘Sitaron Se Aage’.

National Association for the Blind, Mumbai have converted this book into a “Talking Book” format for the benefit of the blind. The book is recorded in nine (9) audiocassettes. Portions of the book are being broadcast by various radio stations in Maharashtra.
